Today I wanted to talk about what trips your trigger erotically speaking of course. When you pick up a good erotic book what kind do you reach for? We all have our favorites and I'm ashamed to say I have mine too, although I read almost anything that has erotic content listed on the cover. I've found some rather good books by just picking up something different and new.
I've noticed a trend with the four publishing sites I've polled. Using Ellora's Cave (the big boy or girl of erotica publishing), Phaze Publishing, Siren-Bookstrand, and Excessica Publishing I've collected a list of what seems to be the most popular categories. Much to my surprise their categories seemed to line up. Romantic, Contemporary, Paranormal, BDSM, Menage and Gay/Lesbian.
Since I started out reading Silhouette Desire and Harlequin Blaze books, I can totally understand the popularity of this genre. It also lines up with the Contemporary genre. After looking at the two categories side by side, they may seem similar but there are differences. The Contemporary genre simply refers to time frame of the stories. Much like Historical refer to stories set in the past and Regency refers to stories based during the Regency era of England.
As I've grown as a reader and found the world of Erotica, I've expanded my horizons to Paranormal, (got love those sexy vampires and shifters
), ménage and anthologies. That was until I started reviewing for Dark Divas Reviews and found a whole new group of genres that I'd never even thought of. Yep. I found the world of BDSM, gay/lesbian, May-Dec (this one I actually had to read first to understand what kinda book it was. Man, I was naive...lol) and Bi-Sexual.
While doing research on these different types of genres, I was also surprised to see some of the new genres out there which are gaining popularity. Some of them have been split off of other categories, so I can only assume that it's because of gaining popularity. Sci-Fi Fantasy/Paranormal seem to have been split into three separate categories now and the sexy shifter stories I love have gotten their own category as has the Vampires.
Another genre which is gaining popularity is the Western/Cowboy category. This amazes me. While this category isn't one I'd have selected as my first choice but I've read several now and have to admit it's a rather unique blend of the old west with today's morals. At first seemed out of place after reading romance novels set during the same era but I'm getting used to it and am looking towards these books more favorably than when I first started reading them.
But not to be overlooked is the specialty genres which have popped up. These are categories which are unique to the individual publishers. Phaze has a line of books called Urban Phaze which deals with erotic in specific urban cites from Detroit and Chicago to London and Munich. Seems like a rather novel idea.
Now I want to know what your favorite genre is. What are you looking for when you pick up your next steamy story? For me it's usually BDSM, Ménage or Paranormal :D.
Happy Reading!

I can deal with light BDSM,
I can deal with light BDSM, but my favorite is Romance. I love a good historical romance and also a good romantic suspense. Nora Roberts is among one of my favorites, although her stuff isn't as erotic as what I write (or you, Dakota) but she does manage to steam up the pages. I've also come to love Lori Foster. Most of the time, though, if the description of the book looks interesting, I'll buy it. Haven't had too many disappointments yet.
Oh, well paranormal/shapeshifter/vampire romances are great also, but sometimes I'm more in the mood for a contemporary or suspense.
